Man has five basic demands on their life. Education is one of them. Education has no age. Man can learn at any age. Every part of your life has many things to learn. Education is a more and more important part of our life. So we need to accept deep and surface learning also.
Nowadays, we all are facing the pandemic situation of covid 19. All humankind is facing this problem, but students and the education system are more affected by this situation. Although the online education system is running, it's not enough to learn properly. If we have to do something big and more in our life, we have to accept deep and surface learning.
Deep learning means a more extensive neural network in comparison to a simple neural network.
Surface learning is the first line of learning, but we have to stretch more long neural networks. That's what we refer to as deep learning rather than surface learning.
NOW WE WILL KNOW SOME EXPERT'S DOCTRINE ABOUT DEEP AND SURFACE LEARNING.
PANKAJ SAH: The learning given in the classroom is basically about memory formation. It’s taken from a neuroscience perspective. How the memory formatting retrieval system operates helps to understand our memory formation!
Professor DAVID REUTENS, Director of the Center for Advanced Imaging: A lot of data belongs in our world, and we are facing new data all the time. My perception of deep learning is that it's a process to add new data about the world into our existing meaningful Structure.
MERRILYN GOOS: From an educator's perspective, Content and skills reproducing and recalling involve surface learning. Surface learning is surface knowledge or more factual information that is a prerequisite for deep learning. Applying knowledge and skills in new contexts or creative ways, detecting patterns, extending ideas, and being critical of arguments and evidence involve deep learning. Consider the implications of how teachers plan to teach for learners when you read about deep and surface learning.
How does it work?
Students need deep learning and surface to identify several more effective strategies at all steps. However, these strategies can be fairly effective depending on the steps they are learning.
Deep learning: For learning is a committed approach that involves consideration for students. There are various ways to reach out to students and engage them in the subject to learn, think, and complete difficult tasks. Through in-depth learning, students learn new ideas and are encouraged to understand the solution to a permanent problem. Through this, the students try to understand the meaning and apply what they learn in any situation. As a result, they enjoy discussing different perspectives. By making connections between new research, knowledgeable students build their knowledge.
Surface learning: It is a passive learning technique where students learn only what they need. This is a great learning technique that focuses on the needs rather than the details of the material being studied. As a result, students tend to work in different ways and try to understand the meaning. Students focus on the need for assessment with the sole purpose of passing the exam.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DEEP LEARNING AND SURFACE LEARNING:
- As the name implies, deep learning refers to a deep learning strategy, which helps to understand and implement all real-life situations.
On the contrary,
Surface learning logically refers to the monotonous strategy of learning new information and different ideas and relying on basic learning.
Deep learning is a conditional strategy for learning where students try to understand the meaning and implement what is new.
On the other hand,
Surface learning is a strategy to work on reproducing knowledge and skills.
Deep learners are very attentive and firmly committed to their work.
On the contrary,
Surface learners learn only what is needed and rely on root learning.
The feature of deep learning is that it helps to focus on the concepts needed to solve any complex task.
On the contrary,
Surface learning only helps to focus on assessment requirements.
Deep learning helps to get new ideas on the prescribed content and thoroughly examines any argument related to the idea with previous knowledge and experience.
On the contrary,
Surface learning helps to study only the need for testing, and it fails to distinguish patterns.
The main purpose of deep learning is for students to build their knowledge by connecting to new knowledge.
In contrast to that,
The main purpose of surface learning is to teach students the prescribed content concentrates on reproducing only those parts of the required content.
Through deep learning, students become very curious about all subjects and see their work as compulsory work.
On the other hand,
Through surface learning, students learn to use high-quality cognitive skills to master the content they are studying.
Try to understand the material or subject actively.
On the contrary,
Try to learn to repeat what they have learned.
